Launched in the year 1992, the Yacht-Master collection was specifically designed keeping in mind the need for chronometers for navigators. Rolex has been deeply connected to the world of sailing since the 1950s, and the Yacht-Master collection is the reflection of Rolex’s rich heritage, culture and history steeped through the centuries. In today’s blog we invite you to embark on a journey, exploring the history, evolution, and generations of Rolex Yacht-Master watches over the years.
THE VERY BEGINNING OF ROLEX YACHT-MASTER – A DEEPER DIVE INTO ITS HISTORY
Rolex realized that for those at the sea, it’s a constant challenge to stay on course amidst the vast nothingness. The founder of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf approached the then most renowned and prestigious authority for measuring chronometers in terms of precision, the Kew Observatory in Great Britain and had one of Rolex’s watches tested by this observatory. The watch was then certified as a chronometer and it went on to become the first chronometric wristwatch in the world of watchmaking. Ever since then, the most renowned names in the world of sailors such as Sir Francis Chichester and Bernard Moitessier have used Rolex wristwatches.

Soon after, Rolex partnered up with the New York Yacht Club, the brand then went on to form more valuable partnerships that would further strengthen its grounds in the world of chronometer watches. It became a part of several prestigious yacht clubs around the world and became associated with major events, offshore races and coastal regattas. All of which finally led to the official launch of the Rolex Yacht-Master watches in the year 1992.
HERITAGE AND LEGACY – THE EVOLUTION OF THE ROLEX YACHT MASTER COLLECTION
This masterpiece has been on a course of evolution ever since. After over two decades, in 2015, it became the first professional Rolex watch to feature an Oysterflex bracelet, blending elegance with sporty appeal. Since 2015, the Yacht-Master collection has been at the forefront of Rolex’s redefined standards of precision and performance, thanks to its exclusive Superlative Chronometer certification. This certification ensures that every Rolex watch undergoes rigorous in-house testing to meet the brand’s unparalleled criteria for quality and accuracy. A hallmark of excellence, this status is symbolized by the green seal accompanying every timepiece, backed by an international five-year guarantee.
The evolution of the Yacht-Master line has been marked by the integration of high-performance movements: calibre 2236 in the Yacht-Master 37 and calibre 3235 in the Yacht-Master 40 and 42 models. These self-winding mechanical movements are a testament to Rolex’s technological prowess and innovation. Both calibres are designed and manufactured exclusively by Rolex, featuring numerous patented technologies that enhance precision, convenience, and reliability.
Rolex has distinguished the Yacht-Master models by offering them in three sizes—37, 40, and 42 mm—and various precious materials, such as 18 ct yellow, white, and Everose gold, as well as Everose Rolesor and Rolesium.
In 2023, after extensive real-world testing by the celebrated helmsman Sir Ben Ainslie, Rolex introduced a Yacht-Master 42 made with RLX titanium. This high-performance material is valued for its lightweight properties, exceptional strength, and resistance to corrosion, further cementing the Yacht-Master’s reputation as a durable yet refined companion for sailing professionals.
Although only certified Rolex watchmakers will ever view the intricate movements within the Yacht-Master series, their remarkable craftsmanship does not go unnoticed. As of 2023, calibre 3235 bears the engravings ‘Chronometer Perpetual’ and ‘Superlative Adjusted’ on its oscillating weight and bridges, serving as a tribute to Rolex’s commitment to watchmaking excellence.

The newest addition to the Yacht-Master line up exuded a classic monochrome look that could never go wrong! The watch had a bidirectional rotatable 60-minute bezel. The numerals on the bezel stood out beautifully contrasting the matt black and sandblasted dial. The dial had a chromalight display, broad hands and hour markers in simple shapes. This model was everything and better!
