How did Omega get its name?

Omega, a brand that personifies perfection and precision, has created a niche for itself in the watch industry with its long-standing and well established reputation. Originally known as La Generale Watch Co., Omega was founded at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland by Louis Brandt in 1848. Interestingly, he was a key-wound precision pocket watch assembler who sold his work across Europe, from England to Scandinavia. Continuing the legacy, Mr. Brandt’s two sons, César and Louis-Paul took over the company and revolutionized it by building a state of the art, end-to-end manufacturing unit that let the brothers oversee the entire production.

Brandt brothers leveraged on the unit they set-up with control over, tools and machinery including the interchange of components. César and Louis-Paul were able to produce innovative movements, one of which became a global success because of its ease of repair and timekeeping accuracy and came to be known as the Omega Caliber. In 1903, La Generale Watch Co was officially changed to Omega Watch Co. -a spin off to the original brand name. Lionel Messi’s famous quote In football as in watchmaking, talent and elegance mean nothing without rigour and precision thus, righteously resonates with Omega Watch brand.

Today, the world recognizes Omega as a brand that has produced and continues to make some of the finest timekeeping pieces including the first watch ever worn to the moon, famously known as the Omega Speedmaster Professional.
